At Johnson Training Ltd, we provide specialist Pool Operator Training throughout the UK for people responsible for the day-to-day operation, testing, treatment and management of swimming pools. Our training programmes are designed to provide operators with the practical knowledge and technical understanding needed to carry out their responsibilities safely, effectively and with confidence.
We have been delivering specialist pool training for more than 30 years, helping thousands of operators develop their knowledge of pool water quality, pool plant, water testing and safe operational procedures. Whether you are completely new to pool operations, already working within a leisure facility or looking to update an existing qualification, we offer a range of training routes to suit different responsibilities and levels of experience.
Swimming pools require knowledgeable people who understand what is happening both in the pool itself and behind the scenes. Pool operators may be responsible for water testing, interpreting results, monitoring treatment systems, maintaining water quality, operating plant equipment and responding appropriately when conditions fall outside acceptable parameters.
Our Pool Operator Training helps learners understand these responsibilities rather than simply teaching them to follow a set of instructions. Developing an understanding of why particular procedures are required enables operators to recognise potential problems, make informed decisions and contribute towards maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for pool users.
For learners requiring an introduction to swimming pool operations, we offer the Active IQ Level 2 Award in Pool Operations. This one-day programme provides a basic understanding of the operation of swimming pools and other types of pools, together with the knowledge and skills required to carry out pool water testing competently and interpret the resulting readings.
The Level 2 course can be particularly suitable for lifeguards who undertake routine water testing or for organisations looking to provide appropriate training as part of the induction of new members of staff. The qualification is accredited at Level 2 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework.
For people with greater responsibility for swimming pool operations, we provide Level 3 training designed to develop a much broader understanding of pool plant and pool water management. Our course range includes the Active IQ Level 3 Award in Managing Pool Operations, which is designed for people working with swimming pools on a regular basis and those responsible for staff carrying out pool operational duties.
We also provide the JTL Level 3 Pool Plant Operator Certificate, giving learners another route for developing more comprehensive pool plant knowledge. Level 3 training explores the processes involved in maintaining safe and efficient pool operation in considerably greater detail and is particularly relevant to those who have direct responsibility for pool plant and water quality.
Good pool operation depends heavily on maintaining appropriate water quality. Our training covers the principles operators need to understand when assessing and managing pool water, including contamination, disinfection, pH, alkalinity, hardness, total dissolved solids and bacteriological testing.
Learners can also develop their understanding of practical pool water testing, the interpretation of test results and the importance of maintaining accurate records. Rather than viewing water testing as an isolated task, our training helps operators understand how the readings they obtain relate to the operation of the wider pool water treatment system.
Pool operators with responsibility for plant equipment need to understand how the different parts of a circulation and treatment system work together. Our more advanced Pool Operator Training covers pool water treatment processes, filtration, backwashing, water flow, pool plant components and the safe use of pool water treatment chemicals.
Training also considers areas such as water balance, operational procedures, microbiological risks, pool-related emergencies, hydraulics and other factors that can affect safe and efficient pool operation. This gives operators a broader understanding of the plant room rather than focusing solely on individual routine tasks.
Pool operating requirements can vary considerably depending on the type of facility involved. A large public swimming pool does not necessarily present the same operational circumstances as a school, hotel or hydrotherapy pool, so we provide specialist training for people working within these environments.
Our JTL School, Hotel and Hydrotherapy Pool Operator Training Programme has been developed specifically for school caretakers, therapists, engineers and operators of smaller commercial pools, school pools, hotel pools and hydrotherapy pools. It provides focused training for those who need an appropriate level of operational and pool plant knowledge for these types of facilities.
Pool Operator Training should not end when the initial qualification has been completed. Knowledge needs to remain current and operators need to remain familiar with changes in guidance, procedures and accepted industry practice.
We provide Pool Plant Update and Refresher Training for suitably qualified operators who need to refresh and maintain their existing Level 3 knowledge. Johnson Training recommends refreshing a Level 3 Pool Plant Operator qualification every three years in order to help ensure that knowledge remains current, suitable and sufficient.
We recognise that learners and organisations have different requirements when arranging training. Our course range therefore includes both face-to-face programmes and online learning options, depending on the particular qualification or training programme selected.
Online Pool Operator Training can provide additional flexibility for learners who need to work around existing responsibilities or who are unable to attend a scheduled course easily. Face-to-face training gives learners the opportunity to work directly with an experienced trainer and discuss the practical application of the subjects being covered. We can help you identify the most appropriate route based on your existing knowledge and responsibilities.
Our training is suitable for people at different stages of their pool industry career. Someone who only carries out routine pool water testing may require a very different level of training from a person responsible for managing an entire pool plant operation, which is why we provide programmes covering different levels of knowledge and responsibility.
Our courses can support lifeguards, leisure centre staff, pool plant operators, managers, school caretakers, engineers, therapists and others whose work involves the operation or supervision of swimming pools. Where you are unsure which programme best matches your role, we can help you determine the most suitable starting point.
Johnson Training Ltd has specialised in technical pool training for more than 30 years. Our Managing Director and Technical Consultant, Jim Johnson, has trained thousands of Pool Plant Operators and brings extensive experience in pool plant operations, engineering building services and technical training to the programmes we provide.
Our focus is on providing training that gives operators a genuine understanding of their responsibilities and the systems they work with. By combining technical knowledge with the practical realities of swimming pool operation, we aim to help learners become more confident, knowledgeable and effective within their roles.
If you are looking for Pool Operator Training in the UK, Johnson Training Ltd offers a range of programmes for individual learners and organisations. From introductory Level 2 Pool Operations training through to Level 3 Pool Plant Operator courses, specialist school, hotel and hydrotherapy training and refresher programmes, we can help you find training appropriate to your responsibilities and existing experience.
